    Food

Start the Day in Samatya Square

Begin in Samatya Square, the meeting point of the old Greek and Armenian quarters that remained inside the walls. The fish shops and meyhanes around the square still reflect the neighborhood’s connection to the shore, and in the morning the same tables used at night are set for breakfast.

    History

Count the Seven Towers from Inside

Enter Yedikule Fortress, where four towers belong to the Theodosian Walls and three more were added by Mehmed the Conqueror in 1458 to create an enclosed fortress. The site later served first as a treasury and then as a prison for political captives; the deposed Sultan Osman II was brought here in 1622. It became a museum in 1895.

Look at Soil That Is Still Cultivated

Pause at the Yedikule Gardens, where plots along the walls have been cultivated continuously since the 5th century, when the walls were built. A register from 1735 lists 344 market gardens here. In the Byzantine period, spaces beneath the walls were used as storage, and the gardeners were also held responsible for wall maintenance. Today the area remains at the center of preservation debates.

At Belgradkapı, the fortifications are especially easy to read: the inner wall, outer wall, and the ditch between them stand side by side as three distinct lines. The alternating bands of brick and stone make the layered construction method visible at a glance.

Look for the Fish in the Sacred Pool

Visit the Balıklı Greek Holy Spring, known in Greek as Zoodochos Pigi, meaning ‘life-giving source.’ Its origins are traced back to the reign of Emperor Leo I (457–474). From the 18th century onward, it became known as Balıklı because of the fish in its pool. The present church was rebuilt after the 1835 earthquake, and the courtyard has held patriarchal tombs since 1841.

  6. 06Walk Through the Ditch Line
    Exploration

    Walk Through the Ditch Line

The stretch between Mevlanakapı and Topkapı is one of the longest continuously walkable sections of the land walls. The spacing between the tower remains repeats with striking regularity, and as you walk it becomes clear that the wall is not just architecture but a system of measurement. This is the longest and most open part of the route.

Watch the Siege Unfold in a Hall

Finish at Panorama 1453 History Museum, right beside the walls. Inside, the 1453 siege is presented through a circular painting that rises all the way to the ceiling. After walking the walls from the outside all day, you encounter them here from within, reimagined at the moment of the siege through scale, sound, and perspective.
