ArtEnter Arter Free if You’re Under 24
Start in Dolapdere at Arter, the contemporary art museum that opened here in 2019. The six-floor, 18,000-square-meter building belongs to the Vehbi Koç Foundation, was designed by Grimshaw, and is clad in hand-glazed tiles inspired by Ottoman ceramics. Visitors up to age 24 enter free.
Arter, Dolapdere, Istanbul, Turkey - 02
CultureSee One Building’s Two Lives at Meşher
Continue to Meşher on İstiklal, an exhibition space that opened in 2019 and belongs to the same foundation. The building is half the story: it appears as Friedmann Apartmanı on 1905 maps, as Meymaret Han in the 1930s, and until 2018 it housed the institution you just visited. After that institution moved, the building continued hosting exhibitions under a new name.
Meşher, Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul, Turkey - 03
ExplorationRide the Elevator Through Mısır Apartmanı Galleries
Step through an apartment entrance in one of the busiest parts of İstiklal and explore the stacked galleries inside Mısır Apartmanı. Different floors host different galleries. Commercial galleries here are consistently free, often quiet, and it is completely normal to view exhibitions on your own. Entering the building and taking the elevator is one of the city’s least-known free art routes.
Misir Apartmani, Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul, Turkey - 04
CultureCombine Three Floors in One at Yapı Kredi Culture and Arts
Visit this culture center, which has been on the same street since 1992. In one building you’ll find an exhibition hall, a small museum, a research library, and a bookshop. By the institution’s own statement, exhibitions and events are free. The museum section includes collections of coins, prayer beads, and medals, and the library can also be used as a study space.
Yapi Kredi Culture Arts, Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul, Turkey - 05
ArtSit Down in the Reading Room at SALT Beyoğlu
Head to the lower end of the avenue for SALT Beyoğlu, a six-floor venue inside the late-19th-century Siniossoglou Apartment building. Refunctioned by Han Tümertekin, it has operated here since 2011 and entry is free. Upstairs there is a public reading room and a small cinema.
SALT Beyoglu, Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul, Turkey - 06
LocalDrink Tea in the Open-Air Hazzopulo Passage
Pause in Hazzopulo Pasajı, an 1871 passage linking İstiklal and Meşrutiyet through an open-air corridor. At one time, the printing house inside was used by Ahmet Mithat Efendi and Namık Kemal. Today there is a tea garden in the middle, with second-hand books, records, and small design stalls along the sides. Sitting here is among the cheapest breaks in the city center.
Hazzopulo Passage, Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul, Turkey - 07
ArtEnd the Day in a Former Tobacco Warehouse at Depo Istanbul
Finish in Tophane at Depo Istanbul, a venue operating inside a former tobacco warehouse where all events are free. The program mostly focuses on political and social issues, and the exhibition hall preserves the building’s original warehouse volume. After the crowds of İstiklal, this is the quietest and most serious stop of the day.
Depo Istanbul, Tophane, Istanbul, Turkey
