HistoryLearn the Story of the Sealed Gate
Visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which moved to Balat in 1597 and settled in the present-day Church of St. George monastery in 1602. The main gate has remained closed since 1821, when Patriarch Gregory V was hanged there on Easter night; it has never been reopened in his memory.

PhotographyRead the Red School from Below
Stand outside the Phanar Greek Orthodox College, founded in 1454 by Patriarch Gennadios. The current building was constructed in 1881–83 with funding from banker Georgios Zarifis and designed by architect Konstantinos Dimadis. Its bricks came from Marseille, and the dome at the top was used as an observatory for astronomy lessons.

HistoryThink Through the Iron Church
Explore the exterior and grounds of the Bulgarian St. Stephen Church. Every piece of this 500-ton structure was cast in Vienna between 1893 and 1896, shipped via the Danube and the Black Sea, and assembled here before opening for worship in 1898. Iron was chosen instead of concrete because the ground along the Golden Horn was too weak, and the church reopened in 2018 after restoration.

ExplorationSlow Down on the Colorful Street
Walk along the colorful houses of Kiremit Street in Balat. For centuries, this neighborhood was home to Jewish, Greek, and Armenian neighbors living side by side. Today, the painted facades are its best-known signature, but this is not a stage set: people still live here, doors open, windows stay busy, and the rhythm of the morning continues.

ArtDrop In on the Waterfront Art Houses
Finish at Haliç Art Houses, where historic waterfront homes were restored by İBB Miras teams and opened in 2022 as a space dedicated to contemporary art production. Here, the story of the neighborhood continues not in the past tense, but in the present.
